Dyslexia scholarship

Dyslexia; News from the web:

Have you enrolled in college despite living with dyslexia? If so, Gemm Learning wants to help you keep pursuing your academic and personal goals.

We know that college can be a challenging and exciting time, especially for a student who once struggled with dyslexia. To encourage students affected to pursue higher education, Gemm Learning is offering a $1,000 Overcoming Dyslexia scholarship to one college student in the spring of 2013 and another student in the fall of 2013.

Students who have been influenced by dyslexia can compete for the scholarship by sharing their personal stories. Write an essay on the topic of “How I Overcame My Struggle with Dyslexia” to enter the competition.

Follow the link to their website and read how you can enter the competition and what deadlines and other formalities are. Gemm specializes in software and remote tutoring of the children. They don’t call it tutoring because they work on fixing the underlying issues rather than creating an ongoing string of additional instruction sessions.

Dyslexia library online

Dyslexia News from the web:

We are not sponsored by Dynaread but we need to talk to you about them. This company, who offers reading remediation for children with Dyslexia in 200 lessons, has an extensive library online with information and resources related to the learning disability.

Now as reading is not the strong point from the target audience they have updated their site with Ivona Text-to-speech technology. When you browse their site you will be presented with a red “listen” button that will give you the story verbally. It sounds really well and probably as good as my talking GPS in the car.

In the library they offer articles, explanations and some videos.

Dyslexia News from the web:

We may all be familiar with the fact that people with dyslexia tend to get to do great things (start Virgin airlines, be the CEO of Apple etc). Jay Lenno is also someone who made it to a very rich and successful showhost  who came in the news this week by giving up voluntarily some $5 million of his salary to save jobs of his crew.

This is another positive side of people with dyslexia, the capability to think beyond one’s own needs and wants!

Dyslexia and reading the impossible

Dyslexia; News from the web:

Today we bring you a link to the blog from Abigail Marshall, who is the Webmaster & Internet Information Services Director for Davis Dyslexia Association International.

She presents a picture with at first sight scribbles but at later reflection a message. Her point is that learning to read should focus on whole word pattern recognition to make deciphering easy for our mind.

Education Minister Chris Bourke says a new group of parents and academic experts will investigate what is needed .
