Some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs and businesspeople have not only overcome their learning disabilities, but have figured out how to use them to their advantages. It is somewhat of a badge of honor to be in the same group of individuals as John Chambers, former CEO of Cisco, the legendary Charles Schwab, and Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton. Even Albert Einstein is believed to have been dyslexic. One might not think this type of learning disability would promote success, but looking at this list of achievers, it begs the question: is it possible that what to many looks like a weakness might actually be a strength?

Free public school just for students with dyslexia

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A school just for children with dyslexia is about to open up here in Colorado Springs.

It’s called Orton Academy… and it’s a free, public education. There are only a few schools like this in the entire country.

Located inside the Colorado Military Academy just off of Highway 24, Orton Academy is prepping to open its doors for the first time this August. For this fall, instruction will be provided for students 3rd-6th grade, but the goal is to expand eventually to K-8th.

Co-founders Lynne Fitzhugh and Mike Pickering say this grand-opening is an absolute dream come true. They add this opening is not only life-changing for the students, it changes the student’s entire family dynamic.

The Covid-19 pandemic forced UK schools to close their doors to most children in March. Like many parents across the country, Jesmond resident Nichola Parody home-schooled her three children. However, Nichola’s daughter Heidi is diagnosed as having dyslexia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
