Developmental psychologist Jeffrey Gilger has done some research with brain scans of different groups with and without dyslexia who are gifted and now proposes that dyslexia is a situation where the brain development is different from the norm. It doesn’t match sounds to the correct letter or symbol.

We hear this story every week. A child is tested and borderline meets the criteria for additional resources from the school district and so the teachers (and parents) decide to sit and wait. Well here is some news for you:

Ninety percent of children who are struggling with reading, writing and spelling by mid-year of first grade will still be struggling with those skills in eighth grade and on into adulthood unless they receive specialized help, according to the International Dyslexia Association.

Is that clear now? Can we now move on and get the appropriate attention and help for our kids?
